On our last day in HCMC we went back to the city to see some more sights. We went to the Ben Than market, a famous tourist (trap) location. We then went and visited the Reunification Palace. It was the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was the site of the end of the Vietnam War during the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates. As a result, there is a lot of emotion tied to this location.
Doug Atkins, one of the dear people that we are traveling with had a meeting with a woman that is helping us figure out some ways that we can help the orphanage that the kids are from. She told him, with tears in her eyes that her father was killed by the Viet Cong just hours before the tank crashed through the gates. This beautiful country that brought Jonah into our lives still carries a lot of pain for many people.
